Why ShareVis was added on to SharePoint: Kaz needed a way to track and control business processes from complex engineering procedures to day-to-day operational tasks. One of the most daunting challenges they faced was implementing a complicated engineering change request (ECR) process. Kaz tried to build a solution using Oracle ERP, but found that it was not flexible enough to meet their need for frequent changes and options that could branch to sub-options. In all, they have more than 40 processes in Lotus Notes, which are in use by all 3000 city employees. The City decided to cut costs on user licenses and made the decision to migrate from Lotus Notes to a Web-based solution for these companion applications. They wanted to convert most of their legacy applications to Windows SharePoint Services (WSS).
